CATHOLIC CHURCH OF THE EAST - ARCHDIOCESE OF SAINT JAMES THE APOSTLE
A RELIGIOUS ORDER DEDICATED TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

We are Catholic Church of the East Sisters who live, pray and minister in community, drawn by a common call to give our lives completely to Jesus Christ, His Church, and His people in a life of joyful chastity, and obedience.

We are apostolic Sisters: active and prayerful women.  We are energized for ministry through daily celebration of the Eucharist and adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament and in a rich community prayer life in the Holy Spirit.

As The Religious Order of the Holy Spirit women, we work with Christ to bring healing to people's hearts and peace to their relationships with God, with one another, and with creation.

Becoming a Catholic Church of the East nun is a lengthy process that requires both a “calling” to serve God, and also much time to consider one’s choice.

There are numerous orders of nuns, each with different missions. Those who do not work in the outside world are more traditionally called a nun, while those who work outside of the convent, and are not cloistered are called a sister.

Since there are numerous orders, one should choose one that best fits with one’s ideals about how to serve God. Some women wish to be a nun to retire from the public arena and to serve God in a contemplative way. Other women wish to be active in the world. Some of the best known nuns are those with an extraordinary activist stance, like the deceased Mother Theresa.

Some nuns work as educators in Catholic Church of the East schools, or a nun might also work in the parish office of the Church, being involved in the Church teaching about the spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit. Counseling, working with couples preparing them for marriage and assist in the life of the Church where needed.

How to Become a Nun in the Religious Order of the Holy Spirit in CCE

 1. Pray The most important place to begin is to pray to the Holy Spirit (or continue praying) about this call you sense. Your feeling that God is calling you is not some fluke or self-conjured up idea; it is a gift from God, an invitation into a deeper relationship with God. No matter how your vocation ends up expressing itself (nun, spouse, parent, teacher, advocate, etc.), you are being called right here, right now, to draw closer to God the Father Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.

Be open to listening to God, no matter how crazy or confusing it feels. Embrace the possibility of whatever God has in mind for you. It may be a radical shift to a different way of life than you imagined for yourself when you are anointed by the Holy Spirit and called to serve the Church, or it may be something you’ve kind a known all along. And it could be both!

Remain faithful to pray even when it is difficult or feels like it is going nowhere. Spend more time in prayer to the Holy Spirit who can lead you and help you in all directions and/or be more intentional in the prayer time that you already have.

If you are used to praying first thing in the morning, consider praying again before you go to bed. Review your day and ask God to help you see how God has been with you in the daily life. If you are drawn to the Rosary, consider praying the Rosary with the specific intention of knowing more deeply how Mary and how Jesus responded to their calling.

Read scripture, particularly the stories of people trying to figure out how God is calling them and how they can respond.

Mary (Luke 1:26-38)
Ruth (Book of Ruth 1:15-18)
Disciples (John 1:35-50)
Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1: 4-10)
Isaiah (Isaiah 6:1-10; 49:1-6)
Samuel (1 Samuel 3:1-21)
John and Peter (Matthew 4:18-22)
Paul (Romans 1:1-7; Acts of the Apostles 9:1-19)

Imagine yourself in the story. How would you respond? What words is God speaking to you? Seek Him today by asking the Holy Spirit to come to your life and be with you and guide to answer your calling to be a Sister in the Catholic Church of the East.

Pray with others. Participate in the Eucharistic Liturgy, attend to a bible study or faith-sharing group, pray with others who can encourage and support you in your calling to serve as a Sister in the Church.

And Mary said,
‘My soul magnifies the Lord,   and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant.  Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me,  and holy is his name. His mercy is for those who fear him  from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm;  he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,  and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things,  and sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel,  in remembrance of his mercy, according to the promise he made to our ancestors,  to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.’

Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke this prophecy:
‘Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
for he has looked favourably on his people and redeemed them.
He has raised up a mighty saviour for us
in the house of his servant David,
as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,
that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us.
Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors,
and has remembered his holy covenant,
the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham,
to grant us that we, being rescued from the hands of our enemies,
might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness
   before him all our days.
And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High;
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,
to give knowledge of salvation to his people
by the forgiveness of their sins.
By the tender mercy of our God,
the dawn from on high will break upon us,
to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the way of peace.’
